Artist Statement
Rachel considers her crafts directly related to the traditional female narrative. Her use of textiles and various techniques, as well as the functionality of what she creates is deeply routed in femininity. As a mother, she is currently exploring the conflicted relationship between purpose and creativity in motherhood.
Bio
Rachel is a Brooklyn based textile crafts artist.
Rachel draws inspiration from her maternal grandmother, who made all the clothes for her entire family of seven on top of managing all operations for the family and its business endeavors. At an early age, Rachel began making her own doll's clothes, writing and illustrating books, and experimenting with textiles and other found materials. She went on to study Studio Art at Smith College, and also Painting and Theater Design from the Slade School of Art as well as Film from the University College London. Her career first landed her at the Smithsonian, managing hundreds of public programs and the entire Studio Arts curriculum; then, to New York City, where she held various positions managing large-scale multi-media projects for municipal, cultural, and for-profit organizations. She also produced independent feature films and helmed all costume design and art direction. Most currently, for the last three years she's worked with top cultural and arts education organizations to implement public programming at an annual festival. An avid runner and certified distance running coach, she also trains athletes from beginners to marathoners. Whether it be her own or others, she is an expert at bringing creative projects to life.
